BASIC INFORMATION FOR FIRST TIME CRUISERS

• WHY HAS CRUISING BECOME SO POPULAR?

Cruising has become a specialist way of travelling and exploring new destinations. More than 12 million people will cruise in the next year, and cruising routinely earns the highest ratings in customer satisfaction among all vacation options. It also caters for absolute ALL AGE GROUPS and interests of people. Once you have done it, you will be hooked for life!

• HOW AFFORDABLE IS A CRUISE IF COMPARED WITH A LAND GROUP-TOUR?

If you can afford to take a hotel-based vacation, you can afford to take a cruise vacation. There are cruises available at all price ranges - from budget to luxury - and all represent perhaps the best value for your vacation dollar. Your cruise price includes your cabin, all meals, entertainment, parties and, of course, all transportation between all the ports on your itinerary. On most ships, alcoholic beverages and optional shore excursions are not included in the basic price.

• WHAT TO DO ON BOARD?

You will never be bored on board. Think of a cruise ship as a floating resort on par with any Las Vegas mega hotel. On-board activities begin at dawn and go into the wee hours of the night. The scenery is constantly changing, and every port is filled with new and exciting opportunities for exploration.

Generally the larger ships will have the most activities. You may wish to lounge on deck by the pool with a good book, sign up for exercise or cooking classes, swim, play bingo or bridge, gamble in the casino, take in a Broadway-style floor show or a magician's act, enter a talent show or a putting contest, take a dance class, get a massage or attend a lecture. Cruises normally vary between 7 and 12 days, visiting various ports of call on route.

• IS A DAY AT SEA BORING?

A Day at Sea* is a full day spent sailing between two ports. Most cruises include one or more Days at Sea. Some people who haven't cruised are worried that they'll be bored during a Day at Sea. Nothing could be further from the truth! Every day on a cruise ship is filled with choices - things to do, people to meet and places to go. Whether you pack your days with activities from sunrise to sunset or prefer to take things at a more leisurely pace, a cruise can provide just the type of vacation you are looking for.

• WHAT DOES LAND EXCURSIONS COMPRISE OF?

A term that refers to anything you do off the ship, in port. At every stop, you'll have the option of exploring the area on your own or as part of a group with a planned itinerary. You might hike a tropical rain forest in the Caribbean, take a scenic flight by ski-plane over the glaciers of Alaska, tour the palaces of the Tsars of Russia in Saint Petersburg, visit the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, or take a sightseeing pedestrian day-tour in Tallinn.

• WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VARIOUS SHIPS?

They range from yacht-like vessels with 100 passengers to towering megaships with huge atriums and a maximum capacity of over 3,000 people. Read more on the various ways of cruising below.

• WHAT DOCUMENTATION AND CURRENCY WILL I NEED ON THE CRUISE?

All cruises require proof of citizenship. On all international cruises, departing from ports abroad a passport is required Visas will always be required on these cruise itineraries. Your cruise consultant will advise you on documents you will need depending on your itinerary. The origin of the cruise ship will normally dictate the currency used on board.
Usually you can change currency the evening prior disembarking in a particular country the next morning.

• IS A CRUISE SUITABLE FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN?

Not just suitable, they're perfect! Large cruise ships nowadays are brilliantly designed: around kids-only facilities, daytime activities and night time baby-sitting. Children of all ages are welcome on most ships. Your cruise consultant can advise you of the dwindling number of ships that are not kid-friendly.

• ARE CRUISES SUITABLE FOR SINGLE TRAVELLERS?

Cruising is very popular with single travellers, and cruise lines go out of their way to make it easy for singles to meet and mingle with other passengers. Some cruise ships offer single cabins, and most offer a single supplement rate for double staterooms. In fact, on select sailings we offer singles cruises with our own on board host to organize exclusive singles cocktail parties, mixers, games, group excursions, single-mingle dining and more! You'll never have to feel alone on a cruise... unless that's what you're looking for!
